When anxiety, stress or low mood take hold, the world can start to feel smaller and heavier, harder to switch off, harder to enjoy. Counselling gives you a calm, judgement-free space to understand what you’re carrying and to find your footing again. I’m Lydia Nightingale, a person-centred counsellor in Uxbridge, and I work with people across Hillingdon and West London, in person or online.

What counselling for anxiety, stress and low mood involves

Most people arrive feeling worn down, on edge, or just not themselves, and often a little unsure whether what they’re feeling “counts” as a reason to seek help. It does. Counselling isn’t about being told to think positive or pull yourself together; it’s a confidential hour where you can slow down, put what’s going on into words, and feel properly heard by someone who isn’t going to judge you.

As a person-centred practitioner I trust that you are the expert on your own experience. My role is to offer warmth, acceptance and a steady space, so that you can make sense of the anxious thoughts, the pressure, or the flatness, and gradually feel more like yourself again.

Reasons people come to see me

  • Anxiety and constant worry, a racing mind, broken sleep, that knot of tension you can’t put down.
  • Stress and burnout, feeling stretched to breaking point by work, caring, or life all landing at once.
  • Low mood and depression, when things feel flat, heavy or hopeless, and the things you used to enjoy have lost their colour.
  • Low self-esteem, a harsh inner critic, feeling not good enough, or struggling to believe in yourself.
  • Panic and overwhelm, moments where it all feels like too much and your body won’t settle.
  • A difficult life change, a move, a loss, a new chapter, or simply not knowing who you are right now.

How I work

My approach is warm, unhurried and non-judgemental. I won’t hand you a worksheet or a verdict; instead I help you feel safe enough to be honest, notice the patterns underneath the anxiety or low mood, and find your own way forward at a pace that suits you. Individual sessions are 50 minutes (£70). We usually meet weekly or fortnightly to begin with.

What the first few sessions look like

  1. We start with a free, no-obligation 20-minute telephone consultation, a chance to ask questions and see whether we’re a good fit, with no commitment.
  2. In our first session together we talk gently about what has brought you here and what you’d like to feel different.
  3. From there we meet at a pace that suits you, making sense of what you’re carrying and slowly rebuilding your sense of steadiness and self.

Where to start

Whatever you’re facing, you don’t have to have it all worked out before you get in touch. Many people start with anxiety counselling in Uxbridge, while others come for stress and burnout, low mood and depression, self-esteem and confidence, or support through a major life transition. If you’re not sure which fits, we can talk it through together.

Sessions are held in a calm, private room near Uxbridge town centre, a short walk from The Chimes and Uxbridge Underground, and close to Brunel University, and I see people from right across Hillingdon, Cowley, Ickenham, Ruislip and the surrounding area, or online anywhere in the UK.
